Bluegrass Festival
October 5th, 2008 at 7:11 pm (music, family)
As some of you may know, I love bluegrass music, which is actually quite unusual for my age because most of the kids I run into at school and places are all into hip hop, rap, R&B, etc. And all of those are very different from bluegrass. Tragically, my grade didn’t get to go to the bluegrass festival this year. But I made up for it by going twice over the weekend. We would have gone anyway, but that’s beside the point.
On Friday Alison Krauss, a huge bluegrass star, and Robert Plant, a huge rock star, would be performing together at the bluegrass festival at about five in the evening. My dad picked me up an hour early from school, at 2:30, so we could go stake out a spot. It didn’t do much good. We were stuck at the back of the crowd. It was pretty pathetic. We were hoping to get a spot a bit closer. But it didn’t really matter because the sound was really good. It was as if the band was right there instead of practically a mile away. We went with the rest of my immediate family, my cousin Kai and his sister and dad, and my aunt and her buddies. It was pretty awesome.
Alison Krauss and Robert Plant did some Led Zeppelin tunes (because, for those of you who don’t know, Rober Plant was the singer for Led Zeppelin) but slowed them down dramatically. It was still pretty awesome.
My god, there were so many people smoking pot out there I think we went home stoned. We were right behind this group of people who each had a cigarette in each hand practically. They had a little french fry tray at their feet filled to the top with used cigarette butts. It was pretty stinky.
The next day we left the house at about noon to go back to the bluegrass festival. It was sunny, but the bluegrass festival was in Golden Gate Park so we weren’t sure if it was going to be sunny there. We brought jackets. Despite our leaving at noon, we got there at about one, thanks to the traffic. We got a pretty good spot at the Rooster Stage on the hill. We got a really good view of the stage.
At the Rooster Stage we saw this band consisting of all women. Woman bassist, woman fiddler, woman drummer, woman guitarist, etc. They were backing up a guy…I forgot his name… But it was good.
