Abarat: Days of Magic, Nights of War

Abarat: Days of Magic, Nights of War is the sequel to Abarat by Clive Barker.

Candy Quackenbush is still in the Abarat. Christopher Carrion is still trying to find her and stop her from ruining his plans to take over Abarat. But suddenly it seems like this wasn’t the first time she’s been in the Abarat, and suddenly she’s speaking words of magic she’d never heard before. “A final war is about to begin. And Candy is going to make some choices that will change her life forever…”

To make a long story short…I loved it. But I’m going to tell the long story too. The best part of this book, I think, is the characters. They’re all so…interesting, creative, and I would never, EVER, in a million years have created characters as bizarre and strange as the ones Clive Barker introduces in Abarat. I also love the locations, the places. They are, like the characters, bizarre and strange. The antagonist, Christopher Carrion, is so totally evil and cruel, it’s almost funny. I love it when the antagonist is so…antagonisty it’s funny. It was clever and the dialogue is funny and interesting. But the end kind of left me thinking ‘wait…what??’ I felt like there were things still unresolved. I hope there’s another Abarat book…
